Pastor (Dr.) W.F. Kumuyi
An extraordinary life of unwavering commitment, academic excellence, and a global apostolic mandate spanning over five decades of consistent gospel propagation.
“If you rest while you are not tired, if you rest while your vision is becoming brighter, if you rest when you are seeing farther than you saw 50 years ago, you are not wise. I am getting more vision, strength and power.”
— Pastor (Dr.) W.F. Kumuyi
The Journey of Faith, Excellence, and Global Impact
1. Early Life and Educational Foundation
William Folorunso Kumuyi was born on June 6, 1941, into a Christian home in Erin-Ijesa, Osun State, Nigeria. Growing up, his family emphasized regular church attendance, hymn-singing, and daily Bible reading. He completed his secondary school education in 1961 at Mayflower School in Ikenne, Ogun State, which was established by the renowned educator Tai Solarin.
The highly disciplined, secular humanist environment of Mayflower School initially distanced him from conventional religious activities. However, it also served to build his deep intellectual work ethic. Following his secondary education, he gained admission to Nigeria’s premier institution, the University of Ibadan. In 1967, he graduated with a First Class Honours degree in Mathematics, finishing as the overall best graduating student of his set. He subsequently completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Education at the University of Lagos.
2. Spiritual Awakening and Mathematical Career
While establishing his academic footprints, Dr. Kumuyi experienced a spiritual turnaround on Sunday, April 5, 1964, at the age of 23, when he embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ. This conversion redefined his values and priorities. Even as he began lecturing in Mathematics at the University of Lagos in 1973, his true passion lay in teaching scriptural truth and raising dedicated disciples.
3. The UNILAG Flat 2 Genesis (1973)
On Monday, August 3, 1973, while lecturing at UNILAG, he invited 15 students to his official residential quarters (Flat 2) for an intensive Bible study session. Focused on the tenets of holy living, scriptural authority, and aggressive evangelism, this small group grew rapidly. The fellowship became known as the Deeper Christian Life Ministry. By 1983, the explosive growth of the ministry necessitated the formal establishment of the Deeper Life Bible Church to provide spiritual care and prevent converts from dispersing into other assemblies.
4. Personal Life, Struggles, and Triumphs
In 1980, Pastor Kumuyi married Abiodun Olowu, who became a pillar in the women’s ministry and the founding editor of the *Women Mirror* magazine. Their union was blessed with two sons, Jerry and John. Abiodun Kumuyi passed away in April 2009, a loss that was deeply felt by the global church. On October 16, 2010, Pastor Kumuyi married Esther Folashade Blaize in London, who currently serves alongside him as the National Woman Coordinator of the ministry.
